Maximum flow rates have historically been set by the Appliance Efficiency Regulations, and all faucets and showerheads sold in California must meet these standards. The appliance regulations set limits for showerheads at 2.5 gallons per minute (gpm) at 80 psi water pressure. The limit for lavatory faucets and kitchen faucets is 2.2 gpm at 60 psi. Current flow requirements contained in the CalGreen Code set more efficiency levels. Installations of showerheads and faucets are mandatory under the CalGreen Code and must be met.
